George
MacMillan was born in Lennoxville, Quebec and moved with his wife
to Lanark County, Ontario Canada, in 1995.
They eventually settled in the beautiful town of Perth.
It was Perth (or perhaps it
was his wife) that inspired George to reach
for greater heights, and after 15 years of working to perfect his
craft, he began to turn some serious wood.
He
strives always for the mastery of precise detail in his carving
and brush-work, concentrating
primarily on ducks, raptors and songbirds.
It is this attention to fine detail that brings the birds to
virtual life beneath skilled and seasoned hands. George works
with the varied plumage of the changing seasons, but favours autumn
plumage above the others.
Moving
to Perth proved to be a successful venture for George. The
opening of Black
Duck Studio in 2002 was the culmination
of years of hard work and dedication to his craft. He's
had solid success in the local Ontario and Quebec shows, has competed
in Ocean City, Maryland at the Ward World Championships
and was awarded at three levels of competition. His
most recent accomplishment was in 2005 in the open level at Ocean
City.
The
heritage and strength of the arts and of duck carving is strong
in Perth and it's become a place close to the heart of both George
and his family. Perth also offers him the opportunity to rub elbows
with some of the finest carvers in Canada through the courses
offered at Black
Duck Studio.
George
has done many commissioned pieces; retirement gifts for the likes
of Rear-Admirals and high ranking officials, politicians and of
particular note, a carving for the Premier of Ontario as a gift
to the President of China.
If
you're visiting Perth, take a few minutes to venture into
Black Duck
Studio on the main street of Perth and say hello to
George and the gang. The occupants are as warm and humble as the
little studio in which they gather and the atmosphere is one of
open comraderie and friendship.
Hope
to see you soon!
